Tissot pointer date

In the early 1940’ies Tissot and Omega had been working closely together on making high-end watches since the companies merged in early 1930. The calibre 27 stands as the legacy of the two companies early years in collaboration. But was only very few people know is that the calibre 27 actually was the true legacy of a company named Lemania whom merged with Tissot and Omega in 1932.

Early on Tissot & Omega adopted Lemania’s calibre 27. Omega and Tissot used the movement until the beginning late 1950’ies. Though the most used of Lemania’s calibres was the CH 27 a calibre that Omega used in one of their mostly popular chronographs – the Omega Speedmaster – which was the official time keeper at Olympic games in 1956 and made summited the moon with NASA in 1969. Omega was also chosen as official time keeper at Olympic games in 1932 – a spot in the sun achived with the merge between Tissot, Omega and Lemania in 1933 and the more basic caliber 27.

The base calibre 27 was from the mid 1930 until the mid 1950’ies placed in the most desirable of Tissot watches. Actually Tissot refined Lemania’s calibre 27 into a family of calibres.  Which started which numbers ran from calibre 27-1 and ended with caliber 27-7.

The history of antimagnetic watches

A lot of people believe that the first antimagnetic watch was produced by Omega due to the fact that the company launched a highly likeable antimagnetic model in 1957 – called Omega RailMaster.

However in fact the true pioneers of antimagnetique watches was Vacheron Constantin whom in 1846 began experimenting with the idea of creating antimagnetic watch though its should take the company decades to figure out how to make a watch withstand magnetic fields and how to and which metals to use for construction that specific piece of engineering.

  • The very first fully antimagnetic watch was a pocket assembled by Vacheron Constantin in 1915.  The invention of the antimagnetic was not to be a Vacheron Constantin patent for long.
  • In early 1929 the world was introduced to the first ever seen antimagnetic wristwatch – the watch produced and assembled in the town of Le Locle and by the company Tissot that soon was to be world famous.
  • The massive innovation presented by Tissot in 1929 lead to the merge of Tissot and Omega early 1930.

Société Suisse pour l’ Industrie Horlogere also known as SSIH is known to have been the second largest and one of the most important Swiss Watch Groups. SSIH was established on 24 February 1930 in Geneva by Tissot and Omega and in 1932 they were jointly by Lemania Watch Co. as well as A. Lugrin Co. in L ‘ Orient ( Vallée de Joux ) , who had specialized in the production of more complicated watches. The merged of the 1932 was made to ensure Omega the position as official ” timekeeper ” at the Olympics summer 1932 in Los Angeles. A strategically move that later showed to have been an important step in the development of Omega Sport Watch segment. A partnership that decades later led to the development of the famous Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch.

Value for money

The companies merge of Tissot & Omega in 1930 lead to a period in watch Horology and represents the period where the two companies produces their most revolutionary watches all produced in house. In late 1950’s Tissot meet ultimate consequence of the company merge with Omega in 1930 as it was decided that Tissot position as a high-end brand had to seen an end. The conclusion was a result of the fact that there was no room for internal competition as it was decided that Omega from that day on should be produced and address to a high-end consumer segment, while Tissot new mission was to focus on the midrange segment. For decades to come the SSIH watch group decided to produce and direct Omega & Tissot watches to different costumer segments. The marketing strategy meant that Omega & Tissot watches was sold a very different prices, thus the fact the many of their watches from ca. 1930-1957 was produced under the same principles, from the same materials, have the same base constructions.

In 1983 SSIH and Allgemeine Gesellschaft der Schweizerischer Uhrenindustrie AG ( ASUAG ) Watch Group was forced to merge with their Swiss banks and hence, a single holding company, Société de Microélectronique et d’ Horlogerie ( SMH ) , which later was renamed Swatch Group .
